Powder Puff Thugs
I know fashion trends can be started in a heartbeat, especially if a person who has a huge influence on an impressionable society makes a bold statement. But I'm really having trouble with the clothing that some of these gangsta wanna-be thugs are wearing these days.
Everybody has seen the traditional gear, the cornerstones to a rough and tough look. The Raiders jacket, the Yankees baseball hat, the big baggy jeans that drag the crotch across the ground yet aren't able to cover the tops of a guys underwear. These to me are all signs of somebody who is trying to act like a thug or who is trying to earn some "respect". The image that rap artists and hiphop stars have created is that even if you've never met me, fear me.
What I don't understand is that with the introduction of retro gear over the last few years is also making the clothes you are used to seeing in completely different colors. The first person I can remember doing this is rap artist Eminem when he started to wear baby blue shirts and hats with his logo and name on them. The next thing I knew I was seeing the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox baseball hats made.... in pink! What the hell? How can you take a symbol as powerful as the Yankees and turn them pink?
I was Christmas shopping a few weeks ago and while waiting in line at a store these two guys (who were black) walked passed me wearing bright pink vinyl jackets with matching Nike shoes. They were strutting their stuff trying, I'm assuming, to look tough.
Who is the person who came up with this crazy idea and how did he do it? How the hell did he introduce bright pink and baby blue colors into the hiphop clothing line and not be dragged out into the street and shot? I realize there is tremendous pressure on young people to follow in the footsteps of their peers but c'mon!! Look in the damn mirror before you end up wearing a lime green thong with matching bowling shoes!
