Reason #82743 that I'm going to hell.
I just remembered another story from back home. I'm reluctant to tell this story because the first couple times I passed it along I was called an asshole..... but oh well.
Working the graveyard shift is very difficult and I'm sure that anybody who ever had to work through the night will quickly agree. The actual work part is easy and I admit the time does seem to fly by but it's just so hard to fall asleep at 10 o'clock in the morning and get a good rest. The rest of the world is up and running during these hours and the normal people (dayshift workers) don't seem to care about us night owls.
It was during a summer heatwave that I just couldn't get any sleep. My bedroom was hot, the phones kept ringing, and if the neighbors dog didn't shut up soon I was going to reach down his throat and pull him inside out. In a fit of frustration I finally got up and decided to take a cold shower and then try once again to go back to sleep. It was late in the day and if I didn't get some sleep soon I would be a basketcase for my next shift, which seemed only a couple hours away now. Dammit, this sucks.
So I take my shower, grab something to eat and was on my way back to bed when there was a knock at the front door. "Oh for the love of God..... now what???" I look out the front window and see two small girls standing at the end of the driveway staring at my house. Out of curiosity I open my front door and I find a girl about the age of 10 or so waiting on the front porch. Now, at this point of the day my patience is REALLY running low. I'm tired, cranky, hot, miserable and I just don't want to deal with this crap right now. The girl smiles at me and asks if I like to buy some cookies. Apparently, as I find out from her little sales pitch, she is working towards raising money for a fieldtrip down to blah blah blah so she can blah blah blah and hopefully one day blah blah blah. Unfortunately for her my level of give-a-shit-ness is at an all time low. Fortunately for her though... I want to buy some cookies and get her out of my life on her merry way to blah blah land. So I ask her how much the cookies cost and she replies with a quote of $3 a box.
Now, I don't mind helping out kids who are honestly making an effort to reach goals.... but her timing just couldn't be any worse... you know? So I told the girl that yeah, I'd take a couple boxes of her cookies but I had to go get my wallet. I asked her if she could wait here for a moment and she said that was fine and was smiling ear to ear. As I slowly closed the door she looked back at her friends at the end of the driveway with a big happy face and gave a little thumbs up... how cute I thought.
I dragged my carcass back to my bedroom to get my wallet but at the site of my bed... I said the hell with it.
Even to this day, I wonder how long she stood on my front porch smiling away waiting for me to return. Hmmm......
